Morgan Davis (left) stepped down as TowneBank CEO on December 31, 2022. Billy Foster (right) became president and CEO on January 1, 2023.

TowneBank Names New President and CEO

In August, the TowneBank Board of Directors selected William "Billy" Foster to succeed Morgan Davis as Chief Executive Officer. This announcement follows a months-long process led by a special committee formed by the Board to search for Morgan's successor and to review and assess our long-term management succession plan.

Billy joined the Towne family in 2004 as regional president and led the Towne expansion into the Norfolk community. Since that time, he has served in several executive roles, most recently as president of TowneBank markets in Central Virginia and North Carolina.

"Billy's extraordinary leadership style is deeply rooted in the Towne culture of caring that serves as the foundation of our long-term success," said Bob Aston, executive chairman. "His stellar record of achievement throughout his career stands as a tribute to his warm, welcoming nature that is a hallmark of great community bankers. Rest assured, the future strategic direction of our company will be to maintain a steady, conservative course while reaching for new and exciting horizons. I am excited about our future and look forward to working alongside Billy, our president Brad Schwartz and our phenomenal executive leadership team in continuing to serve our communities while creating value for our shareholder partners."

Billy attended Old Dominion University, earning a BS in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and also earned an MBA from the College of William and Mary. He and his wife Beth have three children and reside in Virginia Beach, VA.

Morgan joined the Towne family in its early days and has served in a variety of roles, from Virginia Beach president to leader of Towne Financial Services Group, to bank president and CEO. Known for his winning personality, musical talents, and love for his community, Morgan will retire on March 31 after assisting with the transition process. He also will continue to serve on the Board of Directors and as an executive consultant focused on mergers and acquisitions, member relations, and other special projects.

"The impact Morgan Davis has made on the culture of TowneBank and the success we have achieved cannot be overstated. I look forward to working with Bob and the entire management team as we look to the future while remaining true to our culture of caring for others and enriching lives — in every community we serve," said Billy.

"Billy's extraordinary leadership style is deeply rooted in the Towne culture of caring that serves as the foundation of our long-term success. His stellar record of achievement throughout his career stands as a tribute to his warm, welcoming nature that is a hallmark of great community bankers."

Exciting Leadership Changes at Towne

In addition to the selection of Billy Foster as our next Chief Executive Officer, the Board also approved a new leadership plan and announced several key promotions to fill new and existing roles. The realignment of executive duties and responsibilities will pave the road to a bright and prosperous future.

Dawn Glynn

Dawn Glynn — Chief Experience Officer and President, Corporate Services Group

Dawn Glynn is taking on the newly created role of Chief Experience Officer and President of Corporate Services at TowneBank. She has responsibility across the banking footprint for private banking, retail banking, marketing, human resources, product development, process improvement, and the entire member experience.

On the importance of this new role, Bob Aston, executive chairman, shared, "Dawn understands what it means to create a warm sense of belonging, and it is that experience we seek to deliver to our members, our employees, and the community every day. As a founding member of TowneBank, Dawn has exemplified our culture of caring from the beginning."

Brian Skinner

Brian Skinner — President and Regional Banking Director for Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina

Brian Skinner is now president and regional banking director for all markets in the state of Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina. Brian, who has been with Towne since 2007, will have executive oversight for the specialty banking lines of real estate finance, commercial real estate finance, and automotive dealer finance.

He most recently served as head of Towne Financial Services Group, which oversees the Company's non-banking lines of business, including residential mortgage, insurance, real estate brokerage, wealth management and vacation property management. Previously, Brian served as chief banking officer and as president for the Peninsula and Williamsburg Virginia markets.

"Brian is a dedicated member of the Towne family with a proven track record of leading both emerging and seasoned financial professionals to exceed their potential and enhance the success of our company," Bob said.

Matt Davis

Matt Davis — President and Regional Banking Director for North Carolina

Matt Davis is now president and regional banking director for North Carolina, including the Triangle, Charlotte, Triad, and Greenville markets. Matt leads Towne's continued growth in its North Carolina markets, which are among the fastest growing for the Company and represent areas of focused expansion in the next decade. Matt brings nearly 30 years of banking experience to his role, having served previously as chief credit officer and chief operating officer at Paragon Bank, whose merger with TowneBank in 2018 gave the company its entry into the North Carolina market. After the merger, Matt served as president of Paragon's legacy North Carolina markets and was selected as the company's chief strategy and risk officer in 2019.

"Matt is well-known across our North Carolina markets," said Bob. "We value his steady hand and leadership expertise as we continue our growth in these areas."

Will Morrison

Will Morrison — President and Chief Executive Officer of Towne Financial Services Group

Will Morrison heads Towne Financial Services Group, overseeing non-banking lines of business, including residential mortgage, insurance, real estate brokerage, wealth management, and vacation property management. He also will join the Corporate Management Group, which consists of the company's senior executive leadership team.

With more than 35 years of leadership experience in banking and financial services, Will has served as chairman and chief executive officer of TowneBank Mortgage since the merger in 2016 with Monarch Bank, where he had held a similar position at Monarch Mortgage.

"Will's leadership has brought tremendous success to TowneBank Mortgage," said Bob. "Towne Financial Services Group represents significant sources of noninterest income for our company, and Will is well equipped to manage both the growth and efficiencies of how these revenue sources come together."

Jim Miller

Jim Miller — President and Chief Executive Officer of TowneBank Mortgage

Jim Miller has served as president of TowneBank Mortgage since 2019 and will continue to hold that title in his new leadership position. Previously, he held the role of chief operating officer, a position he also carried at Monarch Mortgage. A banking industry veteran, he has served in leadership roles at community and regional financial institutions over the past several decades.

"Jim has done an outstanding job in his current role at TowneBank Mortgage," said Bob. "We are fortunate to have his continued and expanded leadership at the helm of TowneBank Mortgage and with our mortgage joint ventures."

TowneBank Announces Agreement to Acquire Farmers Bank and Farmers Bankshares, Inc.

In August, TowneBank and Farmers Bankshares Inc., the parent company of Farmers Bank, announced plans for Farmers Bankshares, Inc, and Farmers Bank to merge into TowneBank. The proposed transaction will bolster TowneBank's number one market share in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA adding Isle of Wight and Southampton counties to the company's service area while expanding Towne Insurance offerings and specialties.

"Our TowneBank family is humbled and excited to join hands with our long-time friends at Farmers," said Bob Aston, executive chairman. "We believe our partnership can bring additional products and expanded services to the clients of Farmers Bank while helping our communities grow and prosper."

"We feel privileged to partner with our neighbors at TowneBank," stated Vernon Towler, CEO of Farmers. "They share with Farmers Bank a commitment to philanthropy and community engagement. TowneBank is an incredibly strong organization."

Farmers Bank is headquartered in Windsor, Virginia. Founded in 1919, Founders is a community bank with eight branches throughout Hampton Roads. As of June 30, 2022, assets totaled $608.6 million. TowneBank has more than 40 locations throughout Hampton Roads, Central Virginia, and North Carolina. Assets totaled $16.9 billion as of June 30, 2022.

In consideration of the merger, extensive due diligence was performed by the management teams of TowneBank and Farmers. The merger agreement was approved by the boards of directors of Farmers and TowneBank. The merger is expected to close in the first quarter of 2023 and is subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approval as well as the approval of Farmers' shareholders.

We look forward to welcoming our Farmers family to TowneBank in 2023.

Prepare Your Home for Winter

There's probably a long list of things that you'd rather be doing than winterizing your home — like curling up by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate. But "winterizing" your home can protect you from incidents that could cost you a lot more time and money in the long run. Protect yourself against Mother Nature's icy wrath, and save yourself some money on utilities, by knocking out these winterizing projects:

  • Protect your pipes — Reduce the chances of bursting pipes by keeping your home warm, insulating your pipes with sleeves if needed, and turning off the water to all exterior faucets. If temperatures drop dramatically below freezing, you can drip your facets to further reduce the chances of bursting pipes.
  • Check your fireplace — If you haven't already, have your fireplace inspected. Keep the flue closed when not in use to prevent warm air from leaving and insects or critters from getting in. Now is also a good time to test your fire alarm and replace batteries if needed.
  • Service your furnace — If your gas furnace is dirty, inefficient, or old, it runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide — an odorless yet deadly gas. Have your furnace serviced to ensure that it's working properly. You can also install carbon monoxide detectors near your furnace.
  • Change your furnace filter — Dirty filters are bad for your health and make your furnace have to work harder. Furnace filters should be replaced every month in the winter.
  • Caulk and weather-strip — If needed, caulk or weather-strip doors and windows that leak air. Depending on quality, caulk needs to be replaced about every 5 years. Your weather-stripping should be replaced if you can see light around the edges of your doors.
  • Weatherproof your windows — If you have older windows, you're probably losing a lot of warm air through them. If you don't have the money to invest in new windows, you can purchase plastic film insulation — a budget-friendly solution that can help insulate your windows quickly and easily.
  • Consider investing in a programmable thermostat — These high-tech thermostats can be programmed to lower temperatures while you're at work or sleeping, helping you to save energy and cut costs.
  • Clean your gutters and downspouts and trim branches — If you cleaned them in the fall, check them again to make sure they're clear. Trim branches that hover over the roof.
  • Store your outdoor equipment and furniture — Extreme cold weather and elements can cause damage to outdoor furniture, grills, and lawn equipment. Move what you can into storage. If you're keeping your grill outside for the winter, protect it with a cover and keep the propane connected but turned off. If you're bringing the grill inside, leave the tank outside in an upright position.
  • Prepare an emergency kit — If the power were to go out due to a winter storm, make sure you're prepared with firewood, bottled water, nonperishable food, blankets, flashlights, candles, and plenty of batteries.

In this role, she will facilitate the continuous growth of Towne Insurance, the 5th-largest bank-owned agency in the nation.

Towne Insurance also has welcomed Stan Park as executive vice president and Director of Business Development and Strategic Acquisitions. He is responsible for facilitating business development opportunities and guiding Towne Insurance's growth through strategic acquisition in the Carolinas.

Suzanne is a 35-year insurance, banking, and financial services professional. Suzanne is firmly committed to the Towne culture of caring and focus on community support and currently serves as a mentor at Menttium. She is based out of Raleigh, NC.

With 31 years of industry experience, Stan has led many acquisition efforts in previous roles and most recently served as regional president of a national independent agency. He embodies the Towne commitment to serving others and enriching lives. TowneBank Celebrates Award-Winners!

Congratulations to these Towne family members who recently received top honors for their achievements.

Buffy Barefoot

Buffy Barefoot, Virginia Beach president, received recognition on the Virginia Business Women in Leadership list. This is the second year that Virginia Business selected recipients for this list. With over 300 nominations, Buffy made the list of 42 honorees. Here is an excerpt from the magazine:

Buffy Barefoot describes herself "as a pretty steady Eddie." During her 27-year career in finance, she has worked for only two companies, and she credits her steady rise to staying in her lane, keeping her nose down, and doing the best job she could. "End of the day," she says, "everything works out."

As Virginia Beach president for TowneBank, Barefoot manages the bank's largest region, with almost 30% of the market share in Hampton Roads, but she also finds time to mentor employees. She tells them that they need to invest in their careers and never stop learning. She also advises them to build relationships in the community, which might mean sitting on local boards and committees, or sometimes stepping out of their comfort zones. "You've got to go to that chicken lunch," she says.

Barefoot doesn't just talk the talk. A lifelong Hampton Roads resident, she has donated her time to local institutions such as Virginia Beach's Neptune Festival, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. She also was a member of Lead Virginia's 2021 class.

Perhaps ironically for a banker, Barefoot says that the best advice she ever got, which came from her father, concerned the ultimate value of money. "He told me that if money can fix a problem, it is not worth worrying about," she says. "Money can't buy happiness, health, or family."

Robin Cooke

Robin Cooke, TowneBank Portsmouth and Suffolk president, was recognized among the Women in Business by Inside Business. This is the 19th year for these honors, and we are delighted that Robin is now among this influential group of women. Here are some excerpts from the Inside Business article about Robin:

At work: At TowneBank, I am responsible for obtaining regional financial objectives. I lead a team of talented bankers and oversee four branch locations located in Portsmouth and Suffolk.

Volunteer activities: I currently serve on the board of Access College Foundation, Portsmouth Partnership, and Bon Secours Health Foundation.

Home and family: I live in Carrollton, with my husband, Michael, and our two sons, Brady, and Drew.

Motivating factor: I was brought up with sports as a cornerstone of my life. I played field hockey at Old Dominion University and have coached over the years. Being my best is what has always driven me. Now in my career, my focus is on helping our members — whether it is families or small businesses — to reach their financial objectives and to be their best.

Advice for women in business: Find a career that you are passionate about and love. It takes relentless perseverance to achieve your goals, but if you love what you do, it will be much easier.

Chelsea Copan

Chelsea Copan, vice president, private banking officer, was selected by CoVa Biz magazine for their Next Gen Award, previously known as Millennials on the Move. This award recognizes young professionals who are leading the way and making a difference in Coastal Virginia. Here's what CoVa Biz said about Chelsea:

Chelsea began working full time at TowneBank after completing an internship. A graduate of James Madison University, the Virginia Bankers Association School of Bank Management, the Vann H. Lefcoe Leadership Development Program, LEAD Hampton Roads, and TowneBank's LEAD Associate Program, Chelsea currently serves on the board of the Red Cross Coastal Chapter. She is a United Way Young Philanthropist, and volunteers with feeding the homeless and supporting TowneBank Foundation activities.

Chelsea says:

So far in my career, I am most proud of…becoming a Private Banker. It has always been my goal to be a Private Banker at TowneBank, where I am a financial partner and trusted advisor to my members.

My next big goal is…to grow my portfolio of professional members, which currently includes physicians, attorneys, veterinarians, and business executives. I also want to continue serving my community and looking for opportunities to make a difference.

The best piece of advice I have ever received is…Find great mentors and then have ongoing conversations with them so you can gain advice on how to grow both professionally and personally.

Something not many people know about me is that…My dog Caicos is an island dog we adopted from Turks and Caicos. She is a delight for us and especially our daughter Ella.

The TowneBank family is very proud of these three outstanding women!

Zelle® allows you to send money quickly — and safely — to people you know and trust, like a pet sitter.

How to Send Money Safely with Zelle®

Zelle® is a fast, safe and easy way to send and receive money with people you trust, like your babysitter, coworkers, fellow PTA mom, or your son's soccer coach. Whether you just enrolled with Zelle® or have been an active user for a while, there are a few tips you should always keep in mind to ensure you are being safe when sending money.

Money moves fast with Zelle®, directly from your TowneBank checking or savings account within minutes*. It's important to use Zelle® only to send money to people you know and trust. You can't cancel a payment once it's been sent if the recipient is already enrolled with Zelle®. If you send money to someone you don't know for a product or service you might not receive — such as paying for an item in an online marketplace and it never arrives — you may not get your money back. Keep in mind that sending money with Zelle® is similar to handing someone cash.

As with all online interactions, it is important to be aware of scams. One example of a payment scam is buying event tickets at a price that seems too good to be true from a stranger and never receiving them. If the seller asks you to use Zelle® to purchase the tickets, you should refuse unless the seller is a person you personally know. Also, keep in mind that no one from TowneBank will ask you to send them money with Zelle® as a test or to send money to avoid a fraud event.

We recommend that you treat Zelle® like cash. Did your friend change phone numbers recently? It's easy for people to change their phone number or email address. When in doubt, contact your friend to verify the email or U.S. mobile number they used to enroll with Zelle® before you hit "Send." Another good check point for ensuring you're paying the right person is to confirm the first name that is displayed for enrolled emails and U.S. mobile numbers. If a person has already enrolled a U.S. mobile number or email address with Zelle®, you can't cancel the transaction, so it's important you get it right the first time.

Neither TowneBank nor Zelle® offers a protection program for authorized payments made with Zelle®. So, if you aren't sure you will get what you paid for, you should use another payment method with purchase protection, such as a credit card.

For more information and videos on how to use Zelle® safely and protect yourself against fraud, visit TowneBank.com/ZelleSafety.

*U.S. checking or savings account required to use Zelle®. Transactions between enrolled consumers typically occur in minutes.
