The American Flag Waves for the American Dream at Carrot-Top Industries

Since 1980, Carrot-Top Industries has honored the American spirit by providing American-made products that build and promote patriotic, corporate, and individual pride. Dwight Morris founded Carrot-Top as a mail-order company based out of his home in Illinois. The name was a tribute to Dwight’s bright red hair. In 1987, the Morris family relocated to North Carolina and set up their growing business in Hillsborough.
Today, the company is still a family-owned business operating out of a 25,000-square-foot facility with 25 team members. Liz Morris, Dwight’s daughter, serves as president and CEO. “Taking over as CEO has been a challenging and fulfilling journey,” Liz says. “I grew up around the business and considered our employees as part of my extended family. That made for a natural transition. What I enjoy most about my work is carrying on my father’s legacy and chasing the American Dream,” Liz says. “Building upon what he started is incredibly rewarding. It’s inspiring to see how our commitment to improvement and making a difference resonates with our team and customers.”
Carrot-Top's most popular products include outdoor American flags, available in nylon and polyester. Carrot-Top is an FMAA-certified retailer (Flag Manufacturers Association of America), which means their American flags are made in America and uphold exceptionally high-quality standards. Their two most popular products, Beacon® Nylon and Patriarch® Polyester USA flags, are made with each stripe individually sewn with lock stitching and all fifty stars embroidered onto the blue star field. This ensures a lasting product.
Officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America, Carrot-Top had the unique opportunity to support the 2023 National Jamboree this past summer. This event is held every four years and the 2023 event was the first since the Covid pandemic. Each contingency, made up of 30-40 troops, normally purchases a unique, custom-made flag for the event. There were more than 15,000 participants in attendance this year.
“We had to produce 500 custom flags in five weeks,” Liz says. “Normally we produce 10-15 custom flags a month for each Cub Scout and Boy Scout troop, so this was a huge increase from the BSA organization’s normal demand. With limited lead time, Carrot-Top crushed this request with high-quality standards and every order shipped on time. Our customers appreciated our support for this event and said we exceeded their expectations.”
Carrot-Top employees are strong community supporters and participate regularly in volunteer work at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. They spent one recent morning sorting through enough potatoes for 11,550 meals, checking for quality. The company also awards one scholarship in the spring and two in the fall to students currently attending or planning to attend college.
“We were referred to TowneBank by an existing customer,” Liz says. “TowneBank and senior vice president Mark Bolash took the time to understand Carrot-Top’s needs as a small business and provided proactive financial advice. Collaborating with honest and nimble partners aligns with my growth mindset.”
