Long-Term Care Planning is Essential
SHARE
Caring for a loved one who can no longer care for themself is daunting. Imagining one day you may be that person is distressing. You move through life unencumbered - you hop in the shower, get dressed, enjoy a meal, or walk to the car without a second thought. What would happen if these simple tasks were beyond your reach?
People living longer confront limitations and infirmities. From muscle strength and mobility to memory, statistics show that 60% of all adults will need some form of long-term care in their lifetime.
Three Topics to Discuss Long-Term Planning:
- Maintaining Independence
Just because people grow older doesn’t mean they don’t have very clear ideas about where and how they want to live. - Avoiding Disruption
Anyone who has cared for an ailing family member knows the emotional and physical exhaustion that comes with providing 24-hour care and supervision seven days a week. Furthermore, there can be family disagreements over who provides care, where it is provided, and how much it will cost. - Financial Impact
Given the unpredictability of your long-term care needs, money is always a concern. How will you afford it? Some believe Medicare and Medicaid will help with long-term care, which is not true. Medicare provides only 100 days of skilled nursing care. Medicaid is only available to those with minimal income and resources. Neither Medicare nor Medicaid provide for long-term care needs.
Long-term care planning is about being prepared, thoughtful, and honest about the life you want. Only you can write a plan and communicate it to your family. Only you can clarify what you want to happen should your capacities be limited. Don’t wait until your options are limited or someone else chooses for you.
