In 1982, Frank Butler, Jr. decided to leave his job as an agent with the Virginia Farm Bureau to launch his own insurance agency. “It was pretty brave of him to quit a paying job with three kids in school to start his own agency,” says Franklin Butler III, Frank’s son. “My father still works with us part-time, so I’m glad he was brave enough to make the move 42 years ago.”
Franklin came to work for his dad at Butler Insurance in 1990 after graduating from Randolph-Macon College. “I went directly from college to working, but then I left at the end of 1995 to chase racing,” Franklin says.

“I raced stock cars for five years before making the decision to return to working for my father. And I’ve been here since 2001.”
Butler Insurance is a family affair with Franklin’s sister Kim also working for the agency. Franklin describes his insight on his profession. “I don’t consider myself an insurance salesman, rather I see myself as an educator. I like to educate people about insurance because every situation is unique. No two homeowners are alike. Everyone has a different automobile or different assets they are trying to protect. My job is to educate them on what coverage best fits their situation.”
Butler Insurance is an independent agency with Erie Insurance as their primary carrier. “We are about 75 percent personal lines, including homeowners, auto, and umbrella policies,” Franklin says. “The other 25 percent is smaller commercial lines, specializing in policies for contractors like HVAC, plumbers, electricians, painters, landscapers, and related industries.”

Butler Insurance Agency connected with TowneBank through Franklin’s BNI (Business Network International) group in Chesterfield where he met and became friends with Betsy Lacy, vice president and commercial banker. “When I was looking to expand our business by acquiring another agency, it was a natural fit for me to call Betsy,” Franklin says. “Betsy made the entire process so easy and pleasant. We have a great partnership with TowneBank now and I am very happy to be part of it.”
“I am proud to recognize Butler Insurance as one of our valued members,” Betsy says. “They are a pleasure to work with, and I appreciate the trust Franklin Butler placed in us to help with their continued growth. Our team in Chesterfield looks forward to working together with the Butler Insurance team for many years to come.”
