Community Crossroads Center
Transforming Lives in Greenville
SHARE
For almost 40 years, Community Crossroads Center has existed with one mission: to transform lives and end homelessness in Greenville. Since opening in 1987, the organization has provided 13,000 continuous nights of service, providing 675,000 nights in a bed, and more than 1.3 million meals to those in need.
The Center was the vision of several local churches looking to provide care and compassion for those experiencing homelessness. “The Agnes Fullilove School was repurposed into the original facility,” says Charles Young, executive director of Community Crossroads Center. “The cafeteria and auditorium served as the shelter, and the administrative team worked out of the school classrooms and offices.” In 2015, the shelter underwent renovations, and today can house 98 men, women, and children per night.
Those in need of overnight housing are welcomed to the building at 6:00 PM each evening. Dinner is provided, as well as breakfast before residents sign out each day at 8:00 AM, often with a bag lunch in hand. “We keep our shelter staffed 24/7 and provide care during the day for those who are ill, elderly, or very young,” says Charles.
The non-profit receives 80% of its funding from churches, businesses, and community members, with additional funding provided through state and federal grants. Community Crossroads Center is currently in a capital campaign to support the construction of a new facility and renovation of the existing structure.
“The new building will allow us to support more people, especially families with young children,” says Charles. “We will be able to offer more wrap-around services, some of which ceased during COVID.”
The new 13,700-square-foot structure is scheduled to be opened in 2025 and will include space for a medical clinic, after-school resources for school-age residents, an education and career center, and conference space for community activities. The space will also allow for continued and increased collaboration with partners like the City of Greenville, Pitt County, Veterans Affairs, and other organizations offering support services.
TowneBank enjoys a fruitful partnership with Community Crossroads Center and selected the organization as the recipient of the charitable contribution celebrating the Greenville Financial Center grand opening in February.
TowneBank and Towne Insurance were also honored to serve as platinum sponsors for the Driving Out Homelessness Charity Invitational Golf Tournament held in April.
“We are so thankful to TowneBank for their generosity and grateful to have them as our banking partner in Greenville,” says Charles. “We are tickled to have financial partners like Allen Clayton and Jim Clement who know us, communicate with us, and want us to succeed.”
