Fine Furniture Handcrafted in Hickory
SHARE
Huntington House has been proudly crafting and manufacturing furniture in the foothills of North Carolina for over 35 years, but their roots in the upholstery business stretch back three generations. It’s both this rich history and vision of its future that keep Huntington House leaders committed to manufacturing 100% of its products in the company’s home turf of Hickory, where they can find the most skilled craftsmen in the industry.
Huntington House began in the late 1980s in less than 10,000 square feet of space, making six sofa styles with 300 fabrics. They now operate over 250,000 square feet, offering 300 sofa and chair styles, 25 sectional collections, and over 1,000 fabrics and leathers. “While we have adapted to meet changing styles, customer demand, and evolving technology, some things stay the same: time-honored construction techniques, standards for quality and craftsmanship, and commitment to the family business,” says CEO Josh Piersall.
At the helm of Huntington House today are Josh as CEO, Corey Teague as president, and Monty Meadlock as vice president of manufacturing. All have been involved in the business from an early age because their fathers were the previous generation who led the company. Josh, Corey, and Monty have all taken turns sweeping floors, loading trucks, and doing data entry, cost accounting, and inventory management. They all have the willingness to step in today to do whatever needs to get done. Josh says the team at Huntington House is top-notch talent, and their commitment to quality is evident in their work. Several of their employees have worked there for 10-15 years. Other privately held furniture companies similar to Huntington House have transitioned operations overseas or have sold to equity firms. Neither option is in the future for them, because they love what they do and appreciate the autonomy to grow how they choose.
As many furniture companies have shifted their manufacturing processes to all machines, Huntington House has maintained its commitment to handcrafted pieces. The Huntington House website features resources and information to help customers learn about their options before they set foot in one of the hundreds of high-end furniture stores around the world to place an order. Alternatively, designers within these community stores are able to help customers decide what they would like to purchase. Once an order is placed, the work at Huntington House begins.
Huntington House uses very high-quality parts in each step of creating the framing, coil springs, cushioning, fabrics, and leathers. Remarkably in this day and age, most steps in the crafting process are done by hand. This requires incredible attention to detail throughout the entire production line, and it is evident in each final product. This level of quality enables the furniture to have a long life in a customer’s home, which equals less waste in our landfills. Huntington House is committed to sustainability; as a proud member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, they continuously strive to find new ways to improve manufacturing practices to have a positive impact on our planet.
Josh enjoys that, at TowneBank, the focus is on relationships and not just transactions. TowneBank’s involvement in the local community is what caught Josh’s eye. and he didn’t hesitate when his friend Scott Baker, Triad president, asked him to join the local advisory board. He is an advocate of the bank as a place to do business and as a partner in the community.
When asked what the future holds for Huntington House, Josh shares that they will focus on training the next generation of craftsmen to sew, assemble, and build, as this is an art form that they want to help maintain in North Carolina. They strive to stay in perpetual motion, focusing on customer demand to help determine designs and fabrics, so keep an eye on trends in furniture design, as we never know what might be next!
