In 1988, William Brumsey III was an attorney with Abbott, Mullen, Brumsey, & Small when the firm decided to open an office in Currituck County. As a lifelong resident of the county in northeastern North Carolina, William III, who goes by Billy, was excited about the opportunity to work in his hometown. Eventually, in the mid-1990s, he had the chance to form his own firm which became Brumsey & Brumsey, PLLC when William IV, who goes by Bill, joined his dad.
“I came to the practice in 1999 after I graduated from law school at Wake Forest,” Bill says. “I have continued to work with my dad ever since.” Bill received both his undergraduate degree and his J.D. from Wake Forest University. He has been an anchor of the Currituck legal community for more than 24 years with extensive experience in estate planning, real estate law, and construction and acquisition law.
“I am a product of northeastern North Carolina, so the most rewarding part of my work is being able to help out people in my community,” Bill says. “That’s very important to us and something we take great pride in.”
Bill met his wife Joanna when they were students at Wake Forest. She is head of the Advisory Services Division at Wall, Einhorn, & Chernitzer in Norfolk. They have three children – Emma, a rising senior at the University of Georgia; Paige, who will be a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill this fall; and Will, who is a senior at Currituck High School. “We are big sports fans, cheering on all of the teams from our children’s schools,” Bill says. “We also enjoy spending time on the water and at our beach house in Carova.”
The family is active in their community including coaching youth sports and helping out many organizations in the area including the Currituck Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, an organization that assesses the needs of juveniles in the community to develop strategies for delinquency prevention through risk assessment.
In 2014, Bill began serving on the TowneBank Currituck Board and became chair in 2021.“We had a longtime relationship with the Bank of Currituck which was the predecessor to TowneBank,” Bill says. “I enjoy my work on the board and feel proud of the work that TowneBank does. Their focus on the communities they serve and the things they do, particularly here in Currituck, aligns with what we try to do here at the law firm. It’s a natural fit.”
