Compassionate Elder Care in Greenville: SILVERcare
SHARE
Senior citizens who want to age-in-place, but might need a little assistance, can turn to SILVERcare for a wide variety of services. Located in Greenville, SILVERcare began in 1993 when Mike and Gail Joyner both had family members who needed some help. “My aunt and my wife’s grandmother wanted to stay in their homes,” Mike says. “They weren’t at the point where they needed to move to an assisted living facility, but they required some in-home help.” Mike and Gail did some research on what was available and decided to create a company that would provide much-needed services in the Greenville area.
“The majority of elder care is either Medicaid, which is income-based, or Medicare, which is health-related,” Mike says. “Neither of these programs was filling the needs that we saw in our region. There was a need for services to be available that didn’t fall within the government-provided assistance programs. “
Some of the services SILVERcare provides include:
- Personal Care Services – Help with dressing, bathing, incontinence care, hygiene, walking assistance, transfers, medication monitoring, meal preparation, exercise, self-care motivation, and companionship.
- Post-Hospitalization Care – Transitional care after hospitalization is at the forefront today in health care. SILVERcare provides care in the home during recovery.
- Light Housekeeping Service – Dusting, laundry, linen change, mopping, trash removal, plant care, dishwashing, routine household and kitchen clean up.
- Dementia Care – Caregivers receive training throughout the year to help with this much-needed service.
- Care Management – Clients are evaluated in their home and services are provided through private and community resources.
- Security Checks – Calls and visits to clients in their homes to assess conditions, note changes, and monitor the client’s safety.
- Recreational Activities – Walks, outings, board games, movies, books, dining out, and stimulating conversation.
Mike shares what is most rewarding about the work SILVERcare does for seniors.
Seeing the relief that we give families as we provide care for their loved ones is the biggest reward. They are often juggling jobs and families, and trying to care for an older adult. We help lift that burden and you can see the appreciation on their faces and hear it in their voices.
SILVERcare currently serves about 70 clients and Ben Gardner, operations manager, is in charge of hiring caregivers. “It is challenging to find the right people. My father had Parkinson’s and lewy body dementia so I try to focus my hiring on who I would want at home with my dad. That’s where I am coming from.”
Mike Joyner has been a CPA for 49 years, first working for another firm before starting his own firm in 1985. Both Michael V. Joyner, CPA, and SILVERcare are family affairs with several children working at both companies. Daughters Kim Anthony and Ashleigh Gardner are CPAs and daughter Kelly Jacobs is office manager for both businesses. Son-in-law Ben Gardner is operations manager and son-in-law Stephen Anthony provides part-time IT support to the companies. “My sisters and I always looked up to our dad and admired him and everything he stands for,” says Kim. “Our greatest joy is getting to work with him, learn from him, and see how his clients have the utmost respect for him.”
Ben adds, “Mike and Gail are so wonderful to work for and we have staff members who have been with us for more than two decades. Once they start working for either company, they never want to leave.”
The TowneBank office in Greenville is next door to the offices of SILVERcare and Michael V. Joyner CPA on Charles Boulevard. “It was easy to get to know some of the folks at TowneBank, but what really made a difference for us was during the pandemic,” Mike says. “We had a number of clients who were trying to apply for loans through the PPP program and had difficulties getting the applications through other banks. We went next door to TowneBank, and they jumped in and processed the applications in much less time and much more efficiently. They continue to service these clients today.”
